WALTHAM, Mass. – Three members of the Brandeis University tennis teams have been selected to represent the Judges at the upcoming NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Singles and Doubles tournaments later this month. Junior
Mandy Reyes of
Manila, The Philippines, and senior
Rebecca Suarez of
New York, New York, will compete in the women's doubles tournament, while sophomore
Daniel Shemesh of
Modiin, Israel, will play in the men's singles bracket.
Reyes and
Suarez have been terrific at the top of the Brandeis lineup, posting a 17-4 overall record, including 14-2 in dual matches. They reached as high as a #7 ranking in Division III, and are currently ranked #13 overall and #2 in the Northeast Region. The pair were also named first-team University Athletic Association selections. They went 2-0 at the UAA tournament and led the #21-ranked pairing from Chicago, 4-3, when the match was suspended. In nine of their 14 dual-match wins, the pair allowed their opponents to win three games or fewer. This will be the fourth NCAA tournament appearance for Suarez – three in doubles and one in singles – setting a program record. Reyes is making her first NCAA tournament appearance.
Shemesh ended his season with a 12-5 record at #1 singles, and a team-best 19-6 overall record, including fall tournaments. Shemesh's defeats all came against opponents from top 15 teams, while he earned wins against opponents from then-#10 Washington University and then-#18 University of Redlands. Shemesh ended his regular season ranked #8 in the Northeast Regional rankings from the ITA and #20 in the nation. This is his first berth at the NCAA Championships.
The NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles tournaments will be held May 22-26, both at Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee and will be hosted by University of the South and Chattanooga. The women's individuals will start competition Friday, May 22 and the finals will be on Monday, May 25, while the men's tournament is from Saturday, May 23 through Tuesday, May 26. Draws for the tournaments will be announced the day before competition starts.
