Reyes and Suarez drop NCAA tourney quarterfinal match to top seeds

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Brandeis University women's tennis tandem of junior Mandy Reyes of Manila, The Philippines, and senior Rebecca Suarez of New York, N.Y., met the top seeds from rival Babson College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Doubles Tournament today, and the Judges fell, 6-4, 6-1, ending their All-America campaign.

Reyes and Suarez had faced top-seeded Matia Cristiani and Alessandra Sikharulizde earlier in the season and dropped a 6-3 set, their only loss in the previous 11 matches dating back to the middle of March.

Today's first set was a back-and-forth affair, featuring five breaks of serve. After the Beavers' Sikharulizde held to open the match, Babson broke Reyes at 40-15. The Judges responded by winning the third game on Cristiani's serve, fighting from 15-40 down to win on a deuce point. Suarez and Sikharulizde held serve in the next two games, but the Beavers broke against Reyes to go up, 4-2. Cristiani held to give Babson a 5-2 lead, but Suarez held again at 40-30 to keep the Judges alive. Brandeis survived a set point in the ninth game, winning a deuce point to get back on serve at 5-4. Unfortunately, Babson broke Reyes for the third time in the set, at 40-15, to take it 6-4.

In the second set, Babson got off to a fast start with a pair of breaks to take a 4-0 lead. Brandeis earned a break in the fifth game at 40-15, but the Beavers did the same in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. The Judges fought off their first match point at 40-30, but the Beavers won the deuce point to take the victory. Both players are also still alive in the singles draw, and Cristiani is aiming for a third-straight NCAA Division III Doubles title.

Despite the loss, Reyes and Suarez clinched All-America honors with their first round win, the first doubles in Brandeis women's tennis history.
