WALTHAM, Mass. -- Behind 16 top-three finishes and four wins, the Brandeis University track and fields teams performed well in their season debut today in the Reggie Poyau '04 Memorial Invitational. The women placed second with all four wins, tallying 92 points, while the men were third with four second-place finishes and had 83 points.
WOMEN'S WINNERS
- The women's winners came from three different classes.Â
- Junior Sadie Harrow (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) turned in a winning performance in the final individual event of the day, the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:32.52. She edged the runner-up from second-place Smith by 0.43 seconds.
- Sophomore Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) captured the 300-meter run in 40.68 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of second place.Â
- The team's single most successful event was the high jump, where first-year Ashley Korbul (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) was the winner, while senior Aiana Colas (Strasbourg, France/Le Gymnase Jean Sturm) and junior Sophie Segal (Hartsdale, N.Y./Ardsley) finished in a tie for second. Korbul reached 1.58 meters (5-2 ¼), while Colas and Segal tied at 1.53 meters (5-¼).Â
- Another first-year, Izzy Ross (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) won the long jump with a distance of 5.22 meters (17 feet, 1 ½ inches), winning by nearly half a foot.
MEN'S RUNNER-UP FINISHES
- Four Brandeis men - including two first-years - earned second-place finishes to pace their squad. Junior Hugh Licklider (Newton, Mass./BC High) nearly pulled it out in the 3,000-meters with a personal-best time of 8:41.48. He made a valiant charge down the home stretch, but finished just 0.36 seconds behind the winner from Bentley.
- First-year Max Eigen (Southboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) had a close finish in the 60-meter dash, finishing nine-hundredths behind the winner from WPI in 7.07 seconds.Â
- In the field events, sophomore Alex Chan (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) took second in the pole vault with a height of 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1 ¼ inches), a foot out of the top spot from Colby. He was one of three Brandeis scorers in the event.Â
- Another first-year, Nate Phillip (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) was seven inches behind the winner in the triple jump with a distance of 12.98 meters (42 feet, 7 inches), outpacing senior Matthew Yue (Vancouver, B.C./Woodside Priory School), who was third at 12.47 meters (40-11). Phillip also came in third in the long jump with a distance of 6.22 meters (20-5).Â

- First-year Andrea Georgiou (Nicosia, Cyprus/Nicosia) in the women's 300-meter dash, finishing in 1:21.23
- Senior Alisha Anderson (Boulder, Colo./Ralston Valley) in the women's pole vault at 3.30 meters (10-10)
- Senior Emma Liu (Taipei, Taiwan/Phillips Exeter Academy) in the women's 20-pound weight at 13.69 meters (44-11)
- The women's 4x400-meter relay of Georgiou, Leroy, sophomore Jasmin Berganza (Providence, R.I./Classical) and junior Natalie Liapis (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), who were second in 4:03.38.Â
