Mandy Reyes (Manila, Philippines/Laurel Springs School) led the Brandeis University women's tennis team at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional championships this weekend, reaching the singles Round of 16 and the doubles quarterfinals in the main draws, while senior
Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China/Shangai International School) reached the finals of the 'B' singles draw.
In the main singles draw, Reyes cruised past Bella Saul from Bates in the first round, 6-2, 6-0. She moved to the second day of action by coming from a set down against 9-16 seed Sophie Diop from Amherst College, 2-6, 6-2, 11-9. Reyes extended Leila Epstein of Wesleyan to a third set in the Round of 16 before falling, 2-6, 6-3, 1-6.
Junior
Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School) also won her 'A' first-round match, 6-0, 6-1, over Teah Login from Emerson, before dropping her second-round match, 6-2, 6-0, to 9-16 seed Suzanne Pogorelec.
In 'A' doubles action, Reyes and senior
Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy) earned a 9-16 seed. They earned a bye into the second round, then knocked off a pair from Connecticut College, 8-1, in the second. Reyes and Suarez then took down the tournament's second seeds from Bowdoin, 8-5, to make the quarters, but were edged by the seventh-seeded tandem from Wesleyan, 8-6, in their quest to reach the final day of action.
In the 'B' singles draw, Zhang was the seventh seed. This earned her a bye into the second round, where her opponent withdrew, earning her a spot in the quarterfinals She outlasted 9-16 seed Jane Lagada from Williams, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 11-9, to reach the semis, where another walkover put her in the finals. Another three-setter ensued against Ren Barton of host Middlebury, and the Panther player prevailed, 6-0, 3-6, 11-9.
