Sealy claims NED3 triple jump title

NEW LONDON, Conn. – First-year triple jumper Sarai Sealy (New York, N.Y./Ursuline School) claimed the New England Division III title at the NED3 Outdoor Championships at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. She helped the women place eighth out of 39 teams with 34.5 points. The men's team finished in a tie for 17th place with 18 points.

SEALY'S TITLE
  • Sealy won the triple jump title with a distance of 12.73 meters (41 feet, 9 ¼ inches) on her third attempt.
  • She beat the second-place competitor by just under three full feet.
  • The performance was also a Coast Guard facility and NED3 meet record.
  • Sealy improves one spot in the NCAA Division III rankings to second overall.
  • Junior Shaniece Nugent (Hartford, Conn./Lawrence Academy) also earned All-New England honors in the triple jump with a distance of 11.58 meters, good for seventh place.
RELAY SUCCESS
  • Sealy was part of two All-New England relays as well. The 4x100-meter relay lowered their own school record by 0.01 seconds, finishing fourth in 48.13 seconds. First-year Jazmin Berganza (Providence, R.I./Classical) ran the first leg, followed by Sealy, Nugent and first-year Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) as the anchor.
  • Sealy, Berganza and Leroy were joined by sophomore Natalie Liapis (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), who ran the second leg to finish third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:00.17.
MORE ALL-NEW ENGLAND HONORS – WOMEN
  • Junior Alisha Anderson (Denver, Colo./Ralston Valley) earned a fifth-place finish in the pole vault with a PR of 3.55 meters (11 feet, 7 ¾ inches).
  • Anderson cleared both 3.40m and 3.55m on her final attempt to reach fifth place.
  • The distance squad had a pair of sixth-place finishes. Junior Ella Warkentine (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) made a nice push over the last two laps in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to go from eighth to sixth, finishing with a time of 11:42.83.
  • Sophomore Sadie Harrow (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) finished the 5,000-meter run in 17:54.38, coming in five seconds behind fifth place and four ahead of seventh.
  • Junior transfer Aïana Colas (Strasbourg, France/Le Gymnase Jean Sturm) rounded out the scorers for the women, tying for seventh place in the high jump at 1.56 meters (5 feet, 1 ¼ inches). She passed on her first height, and was successful on her second attempt at 1.56, as was the athlete from Trinity College with whom she tied.
ALL-NEW ENGLAND HONORS – MEN
  • The Judges' top event was the 800-meter run. Junior All-Americans Garret Rieden (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) and TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) each finished in the top eight.
  • Rieden turned in a time of 1:51.31, surpassing the facility record in the process. He finished second to a runner from St. Joseph's (Maine) by 0.46 seconds.
  • Carleo ran with Rieden for the first 400 meters, but fell behind on the second lap and hung on to finish in eighth place with a time of 1:56.29.
  • The two Judges are tied for 18th in the NCAA Division III rankings, with Rieden now edging Carleo in the standings based on second-fastest time.
  • Senior Lucas Dia (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) finished third in the 3000-meter steeplechase, adding All-New England honors to his All-UAA honor earned a week ago. Dia was edged out for second at the wire, but turned in a time of 9:33.34.
  • Junior TJ Showstead (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) finished sixth in the decathlon, putting together a career-best score of 5235 points on the strength of PR's in three different events.
  • Showstead's PR's came in the 100-meter dash (12.11 seconds), the 400-meter dash (54.14 seconds) and the javelin throw (42.82 meters; 140 feet, 6 inches).
  • He had the weekend's second-best javelin throw, third-best discus (31.75 meters; 104 feet, 2 inches) and came in fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.74 seconds).

  • The Judges return to action next weekend at the Williams College FIRE Invitational as they look to improve their NCAA Division III standings.
