Track and field records three wins at Tufts Stampede

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — The Judges spent two days at the Tufts Spring Stampede meet this weekend. Between the men and women, the Judges earned many PRs and top 10 finishes, including three event wins.  

TOP PERFORMERS - WOMEN
 
  • Junior Sadie Harrow (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and first-year Mikaela Beeler (Livermore, Calif./Livermore) went one and two in the 5000-meter run on Friday night. Harrow earned a 30-second PR with her finish of 17:15, which put her at #4 all-time in  Brandeis history and #23 in Division III this season. Beeler earned a 19-second PR in her first-ever collegiate outdoor 5k, running 17:30. She follows Harrow at #5 for Brandeis all-time and at #45 for DIII. Seniors Katriona Briggs (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and Calli Morvay (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) also saw 5k PRs. Briggs finished in 18:21 for eleventh place, and Morvay finished in nineteenth, running 19:16. 
  • Shae Regan (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) and Kayla DiBenedetto (Andover, Mass./Andover) landed top 10 finishes in the 1500-meter race. Kayla ran 4:47 for sixth, shaving 0.54 seconds off her PR. Shae followed in 4:49, placing seventh in her first collegiate 1500 race.
  • Senior Ella Warkentine (Berwyn, Pa. / Conestoga) splashed down in second place in the 3000-meter steeplechase, running 11:34, and earning a new DIII #57 place.
  • Senior Emma Liu (Taipei, Taiwan / Phillips Exeter Academy) placed seventh in hammer throw with her mark of 45.27 meters (148' 6"), launching herself to #91 in DIII. 
  • The women's 4x100, composed of sophomore Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School), sophomore Sarai Sealy (New York, N.Y./Ursuline School), first-year Izzy Ross (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton), and sophomore Jazmin Berganza (Providence, R.I./Classical) raced a season's best of 48.10 seconds for second place. Their time marked a #2 all-time for Brandeis and a new #29 in DIII. 
  • First-year Ashley Korbul (Staten Island, N.Y. / New Dorp) reigned in the 100-meter dash, racing 12.66 seconds for a ninth-place finish and a 0.4-second PR, landing her at #8 on the Brandeis all-time list.
  • In the 400-meter hurdles,  junior Natalie Liapis (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) laid down a new #5 all-time for Brandeis, #54 for DIII, a PR, and second-place finish with her time of 1:05.31.
  • In the 4x400 relay, the women's team of Ross, Liapis, Berganza, and Leroy saw their first sub-four-minute finish of the season, winning the event in 3:57.16. Their finish earned a spot at #6 on the all-time list. 
  • Leroy and Ross also claimed top 10 finishes in the 200-meter dash, running 25.80 and 25.81 for fifth and sixth, respectively. 

TOP PERFORMERS - MEN
  • Junior Hugh Licklider (Newton, Mass. / BC High) clobbered the competition, pacing his way to a victory in the 3k steeplechase. His 9:27 mark was a 33-second PR, a new #3 all-time for Brandeis, and #24 in DIII this season in steeple. Sophomore Parker Cook (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook) shone in his first-ever steeple race, winning his heat and rising to #8 all-time for Brandeis and #95 in DIII with his time of 9:50. 
  • Sophomore Will Drennan (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) won his heat in his first 1500-meter race, finishing with a time of 4:30.
  • In the men's decathlon, sophomore Eli Wawersik (Westborough, Mass / Westborough) accomplished a 1500-meter collegiate PR, finishing in third with his time of 4:46. He also earned a PR in long jump, 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, where he finished fourth with 51.62 seconds. In the overall decathlon, he placed fifth in the DIII field of the meet with 56.51 points, marking yet another PR. 
  • Junior Michael Laurin (Concord, Mass / Concord-Carlisle Regional) achieved a hammer throw PR, with his mark of 40.59 meters (133'2") for fifteenth place. Sophomore Kevin Wright (Concord, Mass. / Concord Carlisle Regional) landed in tenth place, throwing 45.04 meters (147'9").

UP NEXT – The Judges face off at the Sean Collier Invite at MIT next weekend, with some athletes trekking to Georgia for the Georgia Tech Invitational
