Women's 4x400-meter relay sets record, Judges look to send 3 to NCAAs

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Brandeis University track and field team saw two school records fall, while two individuals and one relay bolstered their positioning for the NCAA Division III Championships at today's Tufts Last Chance Qualifier.

SCHOOL RECORDS
  • The first school record that fell was in the women's 400-meter dash. First-year Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School), competing in just her fifth collegiate meet, ran 56.87 seconds to win the event by approximately a second-and-a-half.
  • Leroy lowered her own school record by 0.43 seconds as she became the first Judge to break 57 seconds. She has now shaved 0.81 seconds off the previous school record that had been held by Jessica Curlew '03 since 2002.
  • Leroy also helped the 4x400-meter relay erase the women's program's oldest record on the track. She ran the lead leg, followed by classmates Jasmin Berganza (Providence, R.I./Classical) and Sarai Sealy (New York, N.Y./The Ursuline School) and senior Hannah Bohbot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif./Los Altos), as the Judges ran 3:53.97.
  • They took down a record that had stood since 1997 and lowered by 2.6 seconds the mark set by the team of Karen Ferdella '97, Nell Harder '99, Cheryl Makarewicz '99 and Victoria Petrillo '99, the latter two of whom are in the Brandeis Hall of Fame.
NCAA POSITIONING
  • Leroy looks to be in line for a berth at next weekend's NCAA Division III Championships, ranking 17th nationally, with the top 20 earning a trip to nationals.
  • The Judges also saw a fantastic performance from junior Garret Rieden (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) in the 800-meter run to clinch a berth at the NCAAs in the 800-meter run.
  • Rieden ran an indoor personal best for the second week in a row in the event, lowering his time by more than a second from the UAA championships to 1:51.67. He is now ranked sixth nationally in the event.
  • The 4x400 team was ranked 23rd nationally, with five repeat teams ahead of them, placing just a few spots outside of the top 12 relays that qualify.
  • First-year Sarai Sealy should be safe for nationals with a sixth-place ranking in the triple jump.
  • Junior Aiana Colas (Strasbourg, France/Le Gymnase Jean Sturm) is also just outside the qualifying position in the high jump. She won the event today with a height of 1.62 meters, but needed to exceed her previous personal best of 1.67 to get into the top 20.
OTHER COMPETITORS
  • Senior Emma Liu (Taipei, Taiwan/Phillips Exeter Academy) placed fifth in the 20-pound weight throw with a heave of 14.45 meters (47 feet, 5 inches).
  • Junior Alisha Anderson (Denver, Colo./Ralston Valley) was 11th in the pole vault with a height of 3.38 meters (11 feet, 1 inch).
  • Sophomore Sophie Segal (Hartsdale, N.Y./Ardsley) took eighth in the high jump at 1.54 meters (5 feet, ½ inch).
  • Bohbot-Dridi took fifth in the 400 for the women, finishing in 59.22 seconds.
  • Sealy also ran the 60-meter dash, running 7.999 seconds.
  • Three Judges competed in the 800 for the men and were separated by just two-hundredths of a second. Junior Matthew Yue (Vancouver, B.C./Woodside Priory School) was eighth in the prelims in 7.20 seconds, earning seventh in the finals at 7.19. Senior Jordan Colon (Devens, Mass./Bromfield School) ran 7.21 seconds and classmate Danny Krigman (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) ran 7.22 seconds.
UP NEXT
  • The selections for the NCAA Division III Championships will be made tomorrow, with the meet being held March 14-15 at the Golisano Training Center in Rochester, New York.
