Liu sets school record in the hammer throw at Tufts

The Brandeis University track and field team opened its outdoor season with a strong showing across two meets, sending athletes to both the Tufts Snowflake Classic and Bryant University's Black and Gold Invitational. Competing against a mix of Division I, II, and III programs, the Judges recorded multiple personal bests, earned several top finishes, and capped off the weekend with a new school record in the hammer throw from junior Emma Liu.

School Record
One of the standout performances of the weekend came from junior Emma Liu (Taipei, Taiwan / Phillips Exeter Academy), who broke the Brandeis school record in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 45.72 meters. Liu surpassed the previous record of 43.84 meters, set by Michele Wilson '02, cementing her name in the program's history books with the new top mark.

Field Events

Liu's record-breaking hammer throw took place at the Tufts Snowflake Invitational.
Junior Alisha Anderson (Denver, Colo. / Ralston Valley) vaulted 3.40 meters (11' 1.75") to take third in the pole vault, earning a new 2025 Division III #20 ranking.

Track Events

First-year Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass. / Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) had a standout meet. She placed second in both the 100m dash (12.39), a personal best, and in the 200m dash with a time of 25.64 seconds, scoring 16 total points.
First-year Jasmin Berganza (Providence, R.I. / Classical) finished 10th in the 100m dash (12.92), a personal best, and 11th in the 200m (26.53). Senior Hailey Crane (Ovid, N.Y. / South Seneca) ran 13.60 for 17th in the 100m and 28.17 for 25th in the 200m.
Senior Kirsten Man (Kendall Park, N.J. / South Brunswick) posted a personal best of 13.78 second in the 100m and jumped 4.70m in the long jump to finish 16th.
Sophomore Natalie Liapis (Plainfield, Ill. / Plainfield North) placed fourth in the 400m hurdles with a DIII New England qualifying time of 1:08.43, earning five points.
In distance events, junior Ella Warkentine (Malvern, Pa. / Conestoga) placed 20th in the 1500-meter with a personal best of 4:55.95.
In the 5000m run, senior Kyra Au (Great Neck, N.Y. / Great Neck South) placed 12th with a personal best of 18:10.44 and qualified for DIII New Englands. Also qualifying was senior Anna Batelli (Oak Ridge, N.J. / Jefferson Township) with a time of 18:18.33, senior Zada Forde (Amherst, Mass. /Amherst Regional) set a personal best qualifying for DIII New England (18:33.17), and sophomore Shayna Zavell (Highland Park, Ill, / Highland Park) set a personal record of 19:13.91.

Field Events

In the pole vault, first-year Alex Chan (Westborough, Mass / Westborough) cleared 4.10 meters (13' 5.25") to earn second place and record a new 2025 Division III #77 ranking.
The javelin throw saw sophomore Sam Krause (New Orleans, La. / Isidore Newman) place sixth with a mark of 44.87 meters (147' 2"), earning three points for the team. First-year Elle Yung (New York, N.Y. / Trinity School) threw 39.95 meters (131' 1") to finish 12th.
Senior Cam Peirce (Kittery, Maine / Portsmouth Christian Academy) led the shot put with a fourth-place finish at 12.57 meters (41' 3").
Sophomore Michael Laurin (Concord, Mass / Concord-Carlisle Regional) led the way in the discus throw, recording a distance of 37.02 meters (121' 5").

Bryant Black and Gold Invitational
Track Events

In the 800-meter run junior Adam Rieden (Littleton, Mass. / Littleton) ran 2:00.17 for 22nd, followed by first-year James Waters (North Merrick, N.Y. / Wellington C. Mepham HS) with a time of 2:04.51 and sophomore Daniel Willis (Needham, Mass. / Needham) finished the race with 2:14.65.
Sophomore Sam Rosen (Dallas, Texas / Lakehill Preparatory School) completed the 400m run with a time of 54.05, followed closely by first-year Jaiden Banton (Kingston, Jamaica / Woodstock Acad.) with a time of 56.33.
Senior Henry Nguyen (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Vocational Tech) recorded a personal best in the 5000-meter, finishing 30th with a time of 15:30.97.
Junior Dylan Zhao (Staten Island, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical HS) led the Judges in the 1500-meter run with a personal best of 4:17.52, placing 43rd. Senior Dylan Whalen (Stow, Mass. / Nashoba Regional) also had a personal best of 4:33.84
In the 100-meter dash, senior Danny Krigman (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) finished 14th with a time of 11.32, and later ran 23.50 in the 200-meter dash.
In hurdles, junior TJ Showstead (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth North) ran 17.68 in the 110-meter hurdles to place 17th. First-year Eli Wawersik (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) placed 11th in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 59.60.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Krigman, junior Matthew Yue (Vancouver, B.C. / Woodside Priory School), senior Jordan Colon (Devens, Mass. / Bromfield School), and sophomore Sam Rosen (Dallas, Texas / Lakehill Preparatory School) placed sixth overall with a time of 43.95, adding four points to the team total.

Field Events

In the long jump, Matthew Yue placed fifth (6.27m / 20'7"), scoring 4 points. First-year Eli Wawersik jumped a personal best of 6.06 meters (19'10.75") to place seventh and earn 2 points. TJ Showstead (5.27m / 17'0.5") and senior Lin Lin Hutchinson (Portland, Ore. / Ida B. Wells) (5.19m / 17'0.5") placed 17th and 18th, respectively.
