#8 women's soccer rolls past UMass Boston, 3-0

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – The eighth-ranked Brandeis University women's soccer team had little trouble finishing their non-conference season tonight, scoring three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over UMass Boston at Boston College High School tonight.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 7-1-3, ranked #8 in United Soccer Coaches Division III poll.
  • UMass Boston, 4-6-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges outshot UMB, 15-1, in the opening half, putting 11 of their shots on frame, including the three goals.
  • Sophomore Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) broke the ice in the 20th minute, when she poked home a rebound off a shot by first-year Moira Koleno (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) that was initially saved. The goal was Leroy's team-leading fourth of the season.
  • In the 35th minute, junior Zareena Mann (San Ramon, Calif./California) took a cross from first-year Grace Carman (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) and blasted it past the Beacon goalkeeper. It was Mann's third of the campaign, while the assist was Carman's fourth.
  • Just 1:17 later, junior Lacey Mbugua (Brockton, Mass./Worcester Academy) took advantage of a poor clearance attempt by UMB goalie Avery Weinstein – a recent fill-in from the Beacons' softball team after a slate of injuries – and chipped it into an empty net to make it 3-0.
  • The goal was Mbugua's third of the season and gives her team lead with 11 points.
  • The teams were scoreless in the second half. Brandeis outshot UMB, 12-4, in the second stanza.
  • Sophomore Penny Alston (New York, N.Y./East Side Community) made two saves after the break, finishing off the shutout, her second and Brandeis's fifth of the season.
  • Weinstein was excellent in her collegiate debut, making eight saves in each half to finish with 16, keeping the Beacons in the contest.
  • With the win, the Judges complete an unbeaten non-league season with seven wins and three draws in 10 games.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will play their first home University Athletic Association contest of the season on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., taking on #2-ranked Emory in their Homecoming contest.
