Bunde brace boosts Brandeis women, 2-1, past CWRU

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Brandeis University women's soccer team rallied from an early deficit with two second-half goals from first-year Valerie Bunde (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) to earn a 2-1 University Athletic Association victory over Case Western Reserve University on Friday evening.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 8-4-2, 1-2-1 UAA.
  • Case Western Reserve, 7-6-1, 1-3 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Case Western Reserve opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Emily Callanen scored off a pass from Izzy Probst, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
  • The Spartans maintained their advantage throughout the first half, applying offensive pressure and forcing senior goalkeeper Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) to make three saves. Case Western Reserve outshot Brandeis 10-2 in the opening half.
  • Brandeis responded in the 65th minute when Bunde found the back of the net for her first goal of the evening. First-year Ella Kauffman (E. Greenwich, R.I./E. Greenwich) assisted on the goal, taking a ball over the top from sophomore Kira Pevow (Houston, Texas/Emery-Weiner Schools), streaking down the right side, and sending a cross into the box for Bunde to finish with a first-touch shot to even the score at 1-1.
  • The Judges found the go-ahead goal less than nine minutes later when Bunde scored her second goal of the game off a high pass from senior Abby Kenkelen (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill) in the 73rd minute to put the Judges ahead, 2-1.
  • The Judges held off the Spartans for the remainder of the match, with Logan making a late save on a shot by Probst in the 83rd minute to preserve the one-goal lead and securing the conference victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Spartans finished with an 18-5 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. However, the Judges made the most of their opportunities, putting all five of their shots on target.
  • Bunde recorded the Judges' first multi-goal performance of the season, scoring both of Brandeis' goals in the second half to complete the comeback.
  • Kenkelen recorded her first assist of the season, while Kauffman's assist on Bunde's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.
  • Logan recorded five saves for Brandeis, while Case Western Reserve goalkeeper Ellie Palaian finished with three saves.
  • The victory marked the Judges' first win over the Spartans since 2019.
UP NEXT
