Shorthanded women's tennis drops season opener at Bryant, 7-0

Box Score

GREENFIELD, R.I. – Playing for the first time this spring against and facing a Division I opponent with just five players due to team members in the COVID-19 protocols, the Brandeis University women' tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision on Saturday evening at Bryant University.

The Judges' best two opportunities to pick up victories came at #1 doubles and #2 singles. Sophomore Ella Subramanian (Parkland, Fla. / Laurel Springs) and first-year Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) took the #1 doubles match to a tiebreaker, falling 7-6 (7-0). Subramanian also had a tiebreaker in her match at #2 singles, falling 6-2, 7-6 (12-10).

Senior Olivia Howe (Cary, N.C. / Crossroads Flex) dropped a 6-2, 6-1, match at #4, while teaming with classmate Summer Quinn (Los Angeles, Calif. / Campbell Hall Episcopal) for a 6-2 loss at #2 doubles. Playing under D1 rules, the Judges would have needed to win both doubles matches to take the doubles point, as they had just five active players.

Other singles results saw Loui fall, 6-0, 6-1, at #1; first-year Cecilia Dennis (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion) dropping a 6-1, 6-1 match at #3; and Quinn losing, 6-1, 6-0, at #5.

The Judges return to action on Friday, Feb. 11, when they host MIT.
