#19 women's tennis breaks into win column, 8-1, over Cal Tech

PASADENA, Calif. – The 19th-ranked Brandeis University women's tennis team won its opening contest of the team's three-match trip to California today as the Judges defeated Cal Tech, 8-1, to improve to 1-1 on the season. The Beavers fall to 0-3.

The Judges edged Cal Tech in the first two doubles matches, with senior Olivia Leavitt (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and rookie Ana Hatfield (Rockford, Ill. / Boylan Central Catholic) winning 8-6 at No. 1 and senior Keren Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J./ Academy of Allied Health and Sciences) and junior Diana Dehterevich (Minsk, Belarus / Secondary School #185 of Minsk) pulling out an 8-7 win at No. 2. They took the tiebreaker, 7-2. The Judges earned their third doubles point with a walkover.

After picking up another point at No. 6 by walkover, Leavitt and Khromchenko rolled at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Leavitt won, 6-1, 6-1, while Khromchenko was a 6-0, 6-1, winner. Senior Sophia He (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4, and Dehterevich was extended to a third set super-tiebreaker but prevailed, 0-6, 6-1, 10-2.

The Judges are back in action on Wednesday afternoon at No. 26 University of Redlands.
