Baseball falls victim to late RIC rally in 2-1 loss

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (courtesy RIC sports information)— The Brandeis University baseball team suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of host Rhode Island College today, as the the Judges were unable to support a fine starting outing by rookie Kyle Shedden (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty).

RIC (16-16) senior pitcher Stewart Braman hurled a complete game two-hitter to lead the Anchormen.

The Judges (5-20) wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as senior center fielder Ryan Tettemer (Westfield, Mass./Suffield Acad.) led off with a double, stole third and scored on freshman left fielder Dan O'Leary's (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) RBI groundout.

Brandeis pitchers Shedden (5 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 K) and Liam Coughlin (Townsend, Mass./Lowell Catholic) (3 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) kept RIC off the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth when sophomore third baseman Mike Webb got the offense moving with a one out single. Webb promptly stole second and them came home on junior first baseman Frank Pettinato double. Catcher Nate Cahoone then brought in Pettinato with what proved to be the game-winner with a single to left field.

Braman picked up the win (2-0), allowing just one run on two hits, to go along with a career-high nine strikeouts, in his first career complete game. Coughlin took the loss in relief.

Pettinato went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Anchormen.

Brandeis is back in action on Tuesday night against Amherst College for a 5:00 p.m. start on Stein Diamond. The Judges will honor their seniors before the game.
