ATLANTA, Ga. – The Brandeis University baseball team got a pair of terrific starting pitching performances today as they garnered a split in the opening two games of their final University Athletic Association series of the season at Emory University. The Eagles won a pitcher's duel in the opener, 2-0, but the Judges got revenge in Game 2, 7-0.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 18-15, 9-9 UAA.
- Emory: 20-17, 9-9 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE (Emory 2, Brandeis 0)
- For the second weekend in a row, Brandeis graduate student Jacob Maurer (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Carroll) was locked in a pitcher's duel in the opener of a UAA series.
- After defeating Washington University, 3-1, last week, Maurer threw seven innings of three-hit ball. He struck out one and walked five, but saw his record fall to 4-3.
- Meanwhile, Emory's Josh Zuckerman went the distance, striking out a career-high 12. He allowed five hits and walked three. Zuckerman threw 139 pitches, 88 for strikes.
- Emory got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the second inning. Maurer walked the first two batters of the frame.
- After Maurer got his lone strikeout of the day for the first out of the inning, Emory's Ryan Roggin singled to shortstop on an 0-2 pitch to load the bases. Mark Serdinak followed with a single to right, also on an 0-2 offering, plating the first run of the game.
- Maurer left the bases loaded, getting a force at the plate and a fly to center to end the inning.
- Brandeis got runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings, but could not force a run across, as Zuckerman got out of first-and-second situations in both frames.
- The Eagles got an insurance run in the eighth, when Serdinak led off with a double, chasing Maurer. Emory bunted him to third and got a sacrifice fly to right to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Judges threatened again in the ninth with two out. First-year catcher Quinn Lanagan (Raynham, Mass./Xaverian), who had two of the Judges' five hits, was hit by a pitch to reach base for the third time.
- Junior pinch hitter Mano Boutsikakis (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) delivered a single off the third baseman to get the winning run on base, but Zuckerman induced a foul pop up on the first pitch to the next batter to complete the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME TWO (Brandeis 7, Emory 2)
- The Judges struck first in Game Two, batting around in the and delivering three runs on five hits in the top of the fourth.
- The first three hitters singled, and after Emory got the first out on a fly to left, Lanagan stayed hot with a two-run double that opened the scoring.
- Junior CF Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) followed with a squibber in front of the plate that the Eagles were unable to make a play on, delivering the third run.
- Brandeis added another run in the top of the fifth, when sophomore DH Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford) drilled a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left for his team-leading third home run of the season.
- The Judges widened the gap with three unearned runs in the top of the sixth, thanks to an inning-opening error. Big blows in the frame were an RBI double by sophomore RF Bobby Quill (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham Regional), a sacrifice fly by sophomore 3B Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and an RBI hit by junior 2B Matt Chafin (Canton, Mass./Canton).
- The win supported Brandeis junior Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier), who threw a career-high 7.0 innings of work. He struck out seven, one shy of a career-best, and only allowed three hits. He walked two and hit a batter, allowing just two Eagles to get past second base. Tringe improved to 3-5 with the win.
- Emory spoiled the shutout bid against a couple of relievers in the bottom of the ninth, taking advantage of a couple of walks and an RBI double before sophomore Brady Lane (Hingham, Mass./Boston College H.S.) got the final out.
- With the win, the Judges have posted their best win total since going 18-16 in 2022. With one more victory they can equal the best campaign since 2016.

- The Judges and Eagles are scheduled to resume their series tomorrow at 12 noon, though weather may play a role.
