Baseball earns series win with 7-5 victory at Emory

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Brandeis University baseball team defeated host Emory University, 7-5, in University Athletic Association action today, giving the Judges their first series win over the Eagles since the UAA moved to on-campus series in 2017.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 20-15, 11-9 UAA.
  • Emory: 20-19, 9-11 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams scored a run without a hit in the first inning, with Brandeis sophomore 3B Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) drawing a four-pitch walk to start the game and scoring three batters later on a sacrifice fly by classmate DH Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford).
  • A hit batter and two Judge errors in the bottom of the frame tied things up for the Eagles.
  • Emory went ahead in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Jake Lawson.
  • The Judges responded in the top of the third. With one out and a runner on first, sophomore 1B Danny Tambascia (Newton, Mass./Newton North) doubled to put two runners in scoring position. A wild pitch plated junior 2B Matt Chafin (Canton, Mass./Canton), and Lee added another two-bagger to bring home Tambascia.
  • Brandeis went ahead for good in the fourth, when junior CF Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) reached on an error, stole second and third, and came home on an RBI grounder to short by first-year SS Noah Koong (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake).
  • The visitors increased their lead to 6-3 in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single by first-year catcher Quinn Lanagan (Raynham, Mass./Xaverian).
  • Brandeis added a key seventh run in the top of the eighth, when Crowley reached on a fielder's choice, picked up his third stolen base of the game, and came home on a double by sophomore RF Bobby Quill (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Rayham Regional).
  • Sophomore pitcher John Milewski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) was outstanding in relief of first-year starter Jackson Herzog (New York, N.Y./Dalton School), throwing 5.2 innings of four-hit ball and keeping the Eagles scoreless from the third through the seventh innings. Milewski earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season.
  • Milewski left with the bases loaded in the eighth, and Emory got a hit to bring two runners home, but sophomore Jack Sweeney (Waltham, Mass./Austin Prep) left the tying run at first.
  • Sophomore Brady Lane (Hingham, Mass./Boston College H.S.) retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the season and the eighth of his career, tied for fourth on the Judges' all-time list.
  • Tambascia had his third career four-hit game, going 4-5, with his second career game with two doubles. He also scored two runs.
  • Lee and Lanagan each had two RBI, while Crowley tied his career-best with three stolen bases. The team had six steals total, their most since the season-opening games against CCNY.
  • With the win, the Judges post their first 20-win season since going 24-19 in 2011.
  • They also finish with a school-record 11 UAA wins – the league started playing their current 20-game seasons in 2017, playing no more than eight games in a season until 2016.
  • The Judges secure their first UAA series win on the road since campus play began, and finish in third place in the league, their highest since tying for the title in 2008.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will play two non-conference games next week to close out their schedule, starting with a game at Curry College on April 29 at 3:30 p.m.
