Second doubles win, but #22 women's tennis falls at #13 MIT, 8-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- In their final tuneup for the 2014 University Athletic Association tournament later this week in Florida, the 22nd-ranked Brandeis women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to #13 MIT this afternoon. The Judges fall to 10-9 on the season, and see their six-match winning streak halted. The Engineers improve to 15-4.

Brandeis's lone win on the afternoon came at No. 2 doubles. The senior tandem of Allyson Bernstein (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Marissa Lazar (Hewlett, N.Y./Lynbrook) picked up an 8-6 win over MIT's Sunnie Lampl and Julia Hsu. It was Bernstein and Lazar's seventh-straight win and team-leading 11th overall. The Engineers took an 8-5 decision at No. 1 doubles and 8-2 at No. 3.

In singles action, five of the six matches were won by the home team in straight sets. At No. 4, sophomore Emily Eska (Princeton, Mass./Wachusett Regional) bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the first set with a 6-4 win in the second. The third set was a super-tiebreaker, which MIT's Krystal Lai won by a 10-8 score. At first singles, Brandeis junior All-American Carley Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) struggled in the first set and fell, 6-0, 7-5, to Elysa Kohrs.

Brandeis returns to action at the UAA tournament on Friday. The Judges drew the fifth seed in the tournament. They will play fourth-seeded and 12th-ranked University of Chicago.
