CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Brandeis women's tennis team advanced to
the University Athletic Association tournament fifth-place match
today with a 5-3 win over host Case Western Reserve University. In
the consolation finals, the Judges dropped a 6-1 decision to
14th-ranked Washington University, finishing in sixth place
overall.
In their opener today, the Judges survived a pair of tiebreakers
in doubles action to take a 2-1 lead into the singles. Junior
Rachel Rosman (Bonita Springs, Fla./Estero) and
rookie Faith Broderick (Washingtonville,
N.Y./Washingtonville) teamed up at first doubles, while senior
Ariana Sanai (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay)
and sophomore Nina Levine (Westport,
Conn./Staples) were victorious at third doubles. Rosman and
Broderick fended off three match points to emerge with the 9-8
(7-5) victory. Sanai and Levine were 7-3 victors in their
tiebreaker.
In singles action, Rosman cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1
singles to emerge as the squad's only double winner of the match.
Classmate Mackenzie Gallegos (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) also
had a straight-set win at No. 4, 6-3, 6-1, to give Brandeis a 4-1
edge.
Case responded with a pair of three-set wins, with Erika Lim
topping Broderick, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 and Emily Pham downing
Sanai, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 to get the Spartans back in the
match. Sophomore Sarah Richman (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley)
clinched the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
In the fifth-place match, Rosman and Broderick finished the
tournament at 2-1 with an 8-5 win over Kate Klein and Karen
Kociemba, but the Judges were unable to take any other points off
the 14th-ranked Bears of Washington University. Rosman had the
closest singles match, falling to Klein, 7-5, 6-2.
The Judges are 9-10 with one dual match left on the schedule,
next Saturday against Trinity (Conn.) at Brandeis.
