SALEM, Mass. (taken from a Salem State press release)
-- Salem State College sophomore Matt Kerr (East Freetown, MA)
pitched a complete-game allowing only one unearned run while
striking out six to lead the Vikings past the Brandeis University
Judges 5-1 in a non-conference game on Monday afternoon. SSC
improved to 5-5 on the season, while Brandeis fell to 3-8.
Kerr pitched six scoreless innings before allowing a run in the
seventh inning.
Salem State jumped out on top in the bottom of the first scoring
four runs off of Brandeis rookie Andrew
Weissenberg (Demarest, N.J./Northern Valley Regional).
Guery Alonzo (Boston, MA) and Tory Ingemi (Malden, MA) both walked.
Steve Mucci (Wallkill, NY) then singled to score Alonzo for the
first run of the game. Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA) contributed by
scoring both Ingemi and Mucci on a two-run double, increasing the
Vikings lead 3-0.
Brandeis sophomore Alex Tynan (Barnegat,
N.J./Barnegat) came on to relieve Weissenberg at that point Joe
Galindo (Monument, CO), who had two hits on the day, singled,
advancing Kane to third base. With two runners on base, Evan
Valcourt (Salisbury, MA) hit a pop up in front of the Vikings
dugout. Senior first baseman Drake Livada (Cape
Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) made a nice running grab, but
heads up base running by Kane scored the fourth run of the inning.
Salem State put runners on base over each of the next four
innings, but the Brandeis relief corps of Tynan, senior
Nick Pollack (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll
School) and rookie Mike Swerdloff (Scarsdale,
N.Y./Ardsley) kept the Vikings at bat. Swerdloff was especially
impressive, giving up three hits but striking out four in three
innings of work.
Brandeis finally got on the board in the seventh inning.
Sophomore RF Zach Malis (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore
JFK) reached on an error and scored on a double by senior catcher
Artie Posch (Hopedale, Mass.), who went 2-for-4 on
the day, accounting for half of the Brandeis hits.
Weissenberg, who faced only four batters in the loss, gave up two
hits and two walks and four earned runs.
The Vikings added another run in the eighth inning when Devon Davis
(Abbington, MA) walked and scored on a wild pitch.
Brandeis is next scheduled to face Wheaton College tomorrow at 3
p.m.
