NEWPORT, R.I. (courtesy SRU sports information) - Brandeis
University built a 7-0 lead through five innings and then held off
a valiant rally by host Salve Regina University to prevail 11-7 in
a non-league baseball game in Newport.
Judges leadoff batter Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass.) collected
three hits and had a stolen base and scored a run. Sophomore first
baseman Drake Livada (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and his classmate John
O'Brion (Portland, Maine) each hit a solo home run in the second
and third innings, respectively.
Starting pitcher Drew Brzozowski (Concord, Mass.) threw hitless
ball through 5 1/3 innings before Seahawk senior infielder Adam
Gingras (No. Attleboro, Mass.) reached him for a one-out single in
the sixth. Senior outfielder Brendan Haire (Waterford, Conn.) was
then hit by a pitch (the 22nd HBP in his career, a school
record).
Four straight base hits by Matt Finlayson (Higganum, Conn.), Justin
Collett (So. Portland, Maine), Riley Diaz (Miami, Fla.), and Robert
Peruzzotti (Mystic, Conn.) helped produce five runs for Salve
Regina (10-7). Gingras doubled in a run in the seventh and came
home on a Haire single, drawing Salve Regina within one run of
Brandeis, 8-7.
Brandeis (6-4) scored three times in the eighth without benefit of
a hit and when Salve Regina went scoreless in the bottom of the
frame, the game was called due to darkness. The Judges have now won
13 of 14 meetings with the Seahawks.
