WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis men's soccer team kept
sixth-ranked Emory off the board in the first half, the Eagles were
able to break through twice after intermission to earn a 2-0
University Athletic Association win and remain unbeaten on the
year. The Eagles improve to 15-0 overall, 5-0 in the UAA, while the
Judges fall to 8-7-2, 0-3-2 UAA.
Emory outshot Brandeis, 8-2, in the first half, but Judges
sophomore netminder Matt Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.)
made six of his nine saves to keep the contest scoreless. The
Judges' best opportunity was a shot by junior midfielder
Corey Bradley (Holyoke, Mass.), but Emory senior
Jonathan Laycock (London, England) made the stop. The Eagles owned
an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half and a 6-1 corner kick edge,
with four of those coming in a two-minute stretch late in the
session.
The Eagles finally broke through in the 53rd minute. Senior
Patrick Carver (Springfield, Mo.) made a nice drive to the end
line, drawing the Lynch off his line. Carver fed rookie Ben Schlang
(Cooper City, Fla.), who converted his ninth goal of the season.
The Eagles had a chance to make ity 2-0 in the 62nd minute when
Brandeis was called for a hand-ball in the box. EU senior Marc Del
Marmol's (Longwood, Fla.) shot to his right was anticipated by
Lynch, who made the save and was able to keep the ball away from
the rest of the attacking Emory crew. Del Marmol was able to add an
insurance tally in the 86th minute, when he knocked home a nice
free kick from senior Joey Howie (Savannah, Ga.), negating the
momentum that Brandeis had taken from Lynch's stop.
Lynch tied a career high with eight saves in the losing effort.
Laycock, ranked No. 4 in the nation in goals-against average earned
the shutout with two stops, one in each half.
Brandeis closes out its home regular season slate on Sunday
afternoon at 1:30 p.m. with a UAA showdown against Carnegie Mellon
University.
