#18 men's soccer drops 3-2 decision to Hobart

WALTHAM, Mass. – The 18th-ranked Brandeis University men's soccer team took a pair of one-goal leads, but the visiting Hobart College Statesmen scored three goals off of set pieces to take a 3-2 non-conference victory on Gordon Field tonight.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 1-1.
  • Hobart, 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges carried the play in the first half, outshooting Hobart, 8-2.
  • Their aggressiveness paid off in the 39th minute, when grad transfer Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld (Santiago, Chile / Northwood School (N.Y.) stole a pass deep in the offensive zone and chipped over the keeper. It was his first goal of the season and the fourth of his career. His previous three career goals came at Kenyon College.
  • Hobart equalized 90 seconds into the second half when Tommy Broderick went up high to head home a corner off the foot of Griffin Couts in the 47th minute.
  • Brandeis went back on top in the 52nd minute. Junior Yoav Feingold (Wellesley, Mass. / Northfield Mt. Hermon) made a nice cross from the right side of the field into the box. Senior Keller Chamovitz (Sewickly, Pa. / Quaker Valley) was there on the left side of the box to volley it home for his first goal of the season.
  • Another corner from the right side in the 64th minute helped the Statesmen knot things at two, with Gabe Smith on the end of Couts's kick.
  • With just under nine minutes left in regulation, Hobart earned a free kick deep on the right side of the offensive zone. Couts took care of business himself, bending a ball through a crowded box for the game-winning goal.
  • Brandeis finished with a 15-12 edge in shots taken, but the Statesmen had a 10-8 margin in shots on goal.
  • The Judge defense cleared a ball off the line and rookie keeper Gianni Nrecaj (Kinnelon, N.J. / Kinnelon) made a fantastic recovery save with under five minutes to go, keeping it a one-goal game. Chamovitz tested Hobart keeper Jake Hans with just over a minute to go, but the save was made to preserve the win for the visitors.
  • Nrecaj had five saves in his first career start, while Hans had six for Hobart.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges are right back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. when they head down Route 30 to take on Regis College.
