Track and field opens outdoor season at Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Brandeis University track and field team got its outdoor season underway on Friday at Bryant University, competing against top Division I, II and III teams at the Jaylin Rainford Invitational. The women placed 10th overall with 23 points, fifth among Division III squads, while the men were 14th with 10 points, seventh among D3 teams.

TOP PERFORMERS – WOMEN
  • The women scored in six events, three on the track and three in field.
  • Junior Sophie Segal (Hartsdale, N.Y. / Ardsley) turned in the top finish for any Judge on the day, earning bronze in the high jump with a height of 1.50 meters (4 feet, 11 inches). She tied with two others from New Hampshire and Tufts on height, but was third on number of attempts after clearing on her third try.
  • Two Judges just missed finishing in the top three. First-year Izzy Ross (Holliston, Mass. / Holliston) taking fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.27 meters (17 feet, 3 ½ inches) on her first attempt. She was six centimeters out of third place and first among Division III competitors.
  • Junior captain Natalie Liapis (Plainfield, Ill. / Plainfield North) placed fourth (2nd, D3) in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.55, 0.09 out of third.
  • Ross also added a point on the track, finishing eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.97 seconds. She was third among D3 runners.
  • Two sixth-place finishes rounded out the women's scorers. Sophomore Sarai Sealy (New York, N.Y. / The Ursuline School) ran 26.31 seconds in the 200-meter dash (4th, D3), while senior Alisha Anderson (Denver, Colo. / Ralston Valley) vaulted 3.25 meters (10 feet, 8 inches) in the pole vault (2nd, D3).
 
TOP PERFORMERS – MEN
  • The men had four scoring performances, three in field and one in track.
  • The highest men's finish of the day came from junior Sam Krause (New Orleans, La. / Isidore Newman) in the javelin. The defending UAA champion threw 54.04 meters (177 feet, 3 inches) to place fifth overall, second among Division III competitors.
  • Classmate Michael Laurin (Concord, Mass / Concord-Carlisle Regional) took eighth place (2nd, D3) in the shotput with a toss of 13.02 meters (42 feet, 8 ¾ inches).
  • First-year Emmett Remis (Newton, Mass. / Newton South) added a seventh-place finish (3rd, D3) in the pole vault, reaching a height of 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3 ½ inches).
  • On the track, sophomore Eli Wawersik (Westborough, Mass. / Westborough) was sixth (4th, D3) in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.84 seconds.
