WALTHAM, Mass. -- Brandeis University senior saber fencer
Lev BenAvram of
Bethesda, Maryland, has been chosen for a fourth-consecutive berth at the NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championships, which will be held at the University of Notre Dame, March 19-22.
BenAvram becomes just the fourth male and fifth Brandeis fencer to be selected to the NCAA Championships four times. He is the first Brandeis fencer to achieve the feat since Maggie Shealy '23/M'25 was selected in 2020 and from 2022 through 2024, and the first men's fencer since Will Friedman '09 earned four berths in a row from 2006 to 2009.
After finishing 16th at the NCAA Championships as a first-year in 2023, he was chosen for the 2023 meet but elected to compete in international competition instead. Last year as a junior, he finished eighth nationally to earn NCAA All-Division All-America honors and was named the Division III Men's Saber Fencer of the Year.
This season, BenAvram finished with a 26-6 regular-season record as he balanced collegiate and international fencing. He posted a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional this past weekend at Vassar College to help clinch his spot at the NCAA Championships. BenAvram also had a third-place finish at a recent North American Cup event held in Cincinnati. He was ranked seventh in the U.S. in men's saber after that event as he seeks to qualify for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
BenAvram is one of just four fencers from a Division III institution to qualify for the NCAA National Collegiate Championships, with the other three representing NYU.

BenAvram is a 2022 graduate of Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School.
