WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University recent graduate Lev BenAvram of
Bethesda, Maryland, of the fencing team, has earned Academic All-America honors, presented by College Sports Communicators (CSC). BenAvram was named to the Academic All-America At-Large Third Team for the second year in a row.
Honorees on the CSC Academic All-America teams must be at least sophomores in academic standing with a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher. For fencing, which is part of the Academic All-America At-Large program, they also must have competed in 67 percent of their competitions or placed among the top eight at a conference or regional championship.
BenAvram is the ninth Brandeis student-athlete in school history to earn multiple Academic All-America awards, and the second fencer. This marks the fourth-straight year that the Judges have had a fencer named to the At-Large team, with Maggie Shealy '23/MPP '25 earning honors in 2023 and 2024, and BenAvram and teammate Tony Escueta '25 in 2025. Overall, Brandeis has now had 29 student-athletes named CSC Academic All-America, accounting for 38 awards.
BenAvram was named the Division III Saber Fencer of the Year this year by the United States Fencing Coaches Association, earning the award for the second year in a row. He also earned his fourth career Division III All-America honor. BenAvram was also named an All-Division All-American for the second time, landing on the second team with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA National College Championships at the University of Notre Dame last March. He was Brandeis's departmental Rookie of the Year in 2023 and was the Harry, Joseph, and Ida Stein winner as outstanding male athlete in 2026.
In the classroom, BenAvram graduated with a 3.77 GPA as a business and Near Eastern and Judaic Studies major. He is active on campus in business and Jewish-life clubs while volunteering with Friends of Sanctuary Uganda. BenAvram is also a competitor on the national and international stage, currently ranking sixth in the United States in saber according to US Fencing.
