BenAvram sixth after Day One of NCAA Men's Fencing Championships

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Brandeis University senior saber fencer Lev BenAvram of Bethesda, Maryland, finished the first day of action at the NCAA National Collegiate Men's Fencing Championships in position for All-Division All-America honors for the second year in a row.

BenAvram won 10 of his 15 bouts to sit in sixth place, one win and two places better than his Day One performance from a year ago, when he finished 14-8 in eighth place. BenAvram is three wins behind the top four finishers, which would give him a chance at a national title.

BenAvram started his day with a 4-3 record in the opening round. He posted wins over regional foes from NYU and Sacred Heart and recorded a sweep over the two-person contingent from the University of Pennsylvania, both by 5-4 scores. His three losses came from the two fencers from the hosts, Notre Dame, and Harvard fencer Colin Heathcock, one of the United States's top saber fencers.

In the second round, BenAvram went 3-1 to improve to 7-4 overall. He bested the two-person contingent from Duke and added a win over Yale, with his lone loss a 5-4 defeat to a fencer from Boston College. He stood in eighth place after the second round.

In round three, BenAvram met opponents from the West region. He opened by splitting with two Incarnate Word fencers, including a 5-4 defeat in his second bout of the round. BenAvram bounced back with a 5-2 win over Air Force and closed the round with a decisive 5-1 win over Stanford to end his day with a 10-5 record.

BenAvram will face fencers from Long Island University, Penn State, St. John's (2), Wagner, North Carolina, and Columbia (2) tomorrow in Rounds 4 and 5 at Notre Dame. His 10 points scored have Brandeis 19th in the men's team standings, one point behind NYU. This is the first year since the 1980s that the NCAA will crown separate men's and women's champions.
