NORTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University indoor track and field teams had their first road meet of the season on Friday evening, traveling to Wheaton College for the Lyon Invitational and beating the inclement weather.

HIGH JUMP EXCELLENCE
  • The Judges' best single event came in the high jump, where they had three top-three performances.
  • On the women's side, junior Sophie Segal (Hartsdale, N.Y./Ardsley) set a p.r. and had a top-100 performance in Division III this season with a height of 1.58 meters (5-2 ¼), finishing in second place. Segal was perfect on her four attempts, including at 1.58.
  • First-year Ashley Korbul (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) passed on heights up until 1.53 meters (5-¼), succeeding on her first try, to finish in third place.
  • For the men, sophomore Eli Wawersik (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) was also a second-place finisher. He succeeded on his second attempt at 1.82 meters (5-11 ½) to post a season-best. Wawersik was two centimeters off a p.r.
MORE RUNNER-UP FINISHES
  • Brandeis had two other second-place finishes.
  • For the women, sophomore Jasmin Berganza (Providence, R.I./Classical) was second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.99 seconds. 0.57 seconds behind the winner from Colby. First-year Izzy Ross (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) won the Open 200 in 27.04 seconds, which would have placed third in the scoring race.
  • The men's additional second-place came from senior Matthew Yue (Vancouver, B.C./Woodside Priory School, Calif.), who jumped 6.49 meters (21-3 ½) on his third jump to edge an RIC competitor by two centimeters, but a quarter of a meter behind the winner from Coast Guard.
BRONZE MEDALISTS
  • Men's first-year Max Eigen (Southboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) finished in third place in the 60-meter dash in 7.14 seconds after running 7.13 in the prelims. Sophomore Jaiden Banton (Kingston, Jamaica/Woodstock Acad., Conn.) ran 7.19 seconds and first-year Sandy Cloud (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) was seventh in 7.22 seconds, both personal-records. WPI's Alex Cole won the race with the #13 time in D3 at 6.85 seconds.
  • Senior captain Emma Liu (Taipei, Taiwan/Phillips Exeter, N.H.) was third in the 20-pound weight throw with a heave of 13.24 meters (43-5 ¼) on her third attempt.
  • Both 4x200-meter relays also placed third. For the men, the team consisting of Eigen, first-year JJ Fleming (Winchester, Mass./Winchester), Banton and Yue posted a time of 1:32.37 in a race decided by 0.26 seconds. The Judges were edged at the tape by Coast Guard for second.
  • For the women, the 4x200 squad consisted of sophomore Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School), Berganza, sophomore Sarai Sealy (New York, N.Y./The Ursuline School) and Korbul, who ran 1:45.96, behind USCGA by 0.08 seconds.

  • The Judges will compete at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational at Boston University next weekend.
