MEDFORD, Mass. – The Brandeis University track and field team competed in one of its largest meets of the season, facing 17 collegiate squads at the non-scoring Tufts Cupid Invitational.
RUNNER-UP PERFORMANCES
- The Judges were paced by a pair of runner-up performances from the women. Junior captain Alisha Anderson (Denver, Colo./Ralston Valley) took second place in the pole vault with a height of 3.40 meters (11 feet, 1 ¾ inches). Anderson topped five others at 3.40m by clearing on her first attempt.
- Junior Shaniece Nugent (Hartford, Conn./Lawrence Academy) was second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.22 seconds, four-tenths of a second out of the top spot. Senior Hannah Bohbot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif./Los Altos) took eighth in the 200 in 26.85 seconds.
MULTI-EVENT STANDOUTS
- The best finish from the Brandeis men came from first-year Eli Wawersik (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) in the heptathlon, placing third overall in his first collegiate attempt, posting a score of 4409.
- Wawersik sat in 15th place out of 20 competitors through three events, but he posted the meet's highest score in the high jump (1.84 meters), boosting himself eight places
- He was second in the pole vault (4.00 meters) to move into the top four in the sixth event.
- His time of 2:53.67 in the final event, the 1000-meter run, was sixth overall and moved him into third place.
- Junior TJ Showstead (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) took 13th in the heptathlon. His top performance was in the shotput, where he finished eighth with a distance of 10.82 meters.
MORE TOP-FIVE FINISHES FOR THE WOMEN
- Sophomore Sophie Segal (Hartsdale, N.Y./Ardsley) placed third in the high jump at 1.56 meters (5 feet, 1 ¼ inches). She cleared her final two heights on her last attempt at each.
- Junior Emma Liu (Taipei, Taiwan/Phillips Exeter Academy) was third in the 20-pound weight throw with a distance of 14.30 meters (46 feet, 11 inches).
- Bohbot-Dridi placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59..69 seconds, behind three top-100 performances.
- Senior Kayla DiBenedetto (Andover, Mass./Andover) was fifth in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:08.77, finishing second in her heat by just 0.15 seconds.
MORE TOP-TEN FINISHES FOR THE MEN
- Junior Matthew Yue (Vancouver, B.C./Woodside Priory School) was 10th in the 60-meter dash in 7.17 seconds, missing the finals by just three-hundredths of a second.
- Yue also turned in a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.34 meters (20 feet, 9 ¾ inches), while sophomore Jon Klu (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) was eighth at 6.04 meters (19 feet, 9 ¾ inches).
