Records fall as track bolsters NCAA chances at Holy Cross and Williams

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University track and field teams spent their weekends split between the NEICAAA Championships at Holy Cross and the Farley Inter-Regional Meet at Williams College this weekend. Two school records were broken in the process and three Judges moved closer to qualifying for the NCAA Division III championships with one meet remaining in the season.

4x100 RELAY RECORD
  • For the second time in three meets, the women's 4x100-meter relay team set a new school record. After tying the previous mark of 49.12 seconds at the UAA Championships, the quartet of senior Smiley Huynh (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx H.S. of Science), senior Liz Korn (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), sophomore Shaniece Nugent (Hartford, Conn./Lawrence Acad.) and senior Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) lowered the mark again, breaking 49 for the first time with a mark of 48.60 seconds. They were fifth in their race.
POLE VAULT RECORD
  • Huynh broke an individual record in the meet as well, pole vaulting to a height of 3.71 meters (12 feet, 2 inches). She placed third behind two top-10-ranked competitors.
  • Huynh became the first woman in school history to vault 12 feet, and she improved her position on the NCAA Championship leaderboard into a tie for 20th place. The top 22 competitors qualify for nationals. She improved by nine spots in the rankings.
800-METER RUN
  • On the men's side, the Judges moved two runners into NCAA contention in the 800-meter run.
  • Sophomores TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) and Garret Rieden (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) ran with each other and finished in fourth and fifth place nearly simultaneously, separated by just 0.01 seconds, at 1:50.38 and 1:50.39.
  • Carleo moved into 18th place on the NCAA Division III Championship rankings, while Rieden is now 19th.
NEICAAA TOP PERFORMANCES
  • At the NEICAAA championship meet, senior Olivia Zarzycki (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) was the only Judge to qualify for the finals. She placed seventh in the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.80 on Friday, but withdrew from the finals to compete at Williams on Saturday. She ran 1:05.36 at Williams, placing fourth.
  • Campbell placed 16th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.86 seconds, while junior Hannah Bohbot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif./Los Altos) was 13th in the 400-meters with a time of 59.24 seconds.
OTHER TOP WILLIAMS PERFORMANCES
  • Nugent took second place in the triple jump with a leap of 11.36 meters (37 feet, 3 ¼ inches) for the women.
  • First-year Sam Krause (New Orleans, La./Isidore Newman) was fourth in the javelin for the men with a distance of 54.69 meters (179 feet, 5 inches), besting his previous PR by five feet.
