Quartet of Judges earn recent UAA Athlete of the Week honors

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University softball senior Haley Nash of Delmar, New York, was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Softball Hitter of the Week for the week ending Feb. 25. She marks the fourth time in the last six weeks that a Brandeis athlete has been honored by the UAA.

Nash was recognized for her hitting during the Judges' 1-3 trip to California to open the season. She hit safely in all four contests, going 7-for-12 at the plate with a double and two home runs, four RBI and four runs scored. Nash posted a .615 on-base percentage and 1.167 slugging percentage, all tops on the team. Her two home runs came in a 6-5 win over the University of La Verne and included the game-winning solo shot in the top of the seventh that broke a 5-all tie. With the two homers, Nash became the fifth player in Brandeis history with 20 career home runs, increasing her total to 21.

The Judges return to action on March 16 at Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Brandeis's other recent UAA Athletes of the Week were:
  • Women's tennis Sophomore Rebecca Suarez of Huntington, New York, who was honored for the week ending Feb. 11, after posting a pair of wins in the then-30th-ranked Judges' 5-4 loss to #10 MIT. Suarez won 8-2 with teammate Bhakti Parwani at #1 doubles and 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, at #1 singles.
  • Men's Track and Field sophomore TJ Carleo of Newburyport, Massachusetts, who was honored for the week ending Feb. 4, for his runner-up finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.31, at the Tufts Cupid Challenge. That mark that moved him into 16th place nationally in Division III in the event. He has lowered his season-best time but currently ranks 18th nationally.
  • Men's Swimming and Diving senior Sam Dienstag of Wilmette, Illinois, who was honored for the week ending Jan. 21. Dienstag was a double-winner for the Judges at their Senior Day meet against Bridgewater State and Keene State on January 20 after missing much of the season due to illness. The two-time All-American won the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 15:57.96 and the 500 in 4:47.65. With his two wins, the Judges defeated Keene State, 158-117, but fell to Bridgewater State, 139.5-117.5. Dienstag has since won the UAA title in the 500 and placed second in the 1,650, and has qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third year in a row.
