Carleo earns All-Association honors in 800 for second time

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Brandeis University sophomore TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) earned his second career All-University Athletic Association honor today at the 2024 UAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Armory in New York City, hosted by NYU. Both the Brandeis men's and women's teams finished in seventh place.

DAY ONE RECAP

SCORING PERFORMERS
  • Carleo had the Judges' lone All-UAA performance of the meet with his second-place finish in the 800-meter run. The 2023 Outdoor champion in the event, Carleo qualified for today's finals in the sixth position with a prelim time of 1:52.52 after finishing fourth in his heat. In the finals, Carleo ran third for the first 600 meters then moved up on the last lap to finish with a time of 1:52.37. While he did not improve on his previous season-best, Carleo is still ranked 17th in Division III and a likely selection for the NCAA Championships in two weeks.
  • The Brandeis women nearly had a pair of All-Association performances, with an individual and a relay coming in fourth.
  • In the triple jump, sophomore Shaniece Nugent (Hartford, Conn./Lawrence Academy) placed fourth with a career-best distance of 11.42 meters (37 feet, 5 ¾ inches). The leap came on her second jump of the day and had her in third place, but eventual runner-up from Chicago passed her in the third round. Nugent is ranked 34th in Division III and would need to improve by 0.2 meters at next week's last chance meet to move into the top 20 for nationals. Nugent placed fifth in the triple jump outdoors and sixth indoors last year.
  • Nugent also helped contribute to the Judges' other fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The quartet of junior Hannah Bohbot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif./Los Altos), senior Liz Korn (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), Nugent and senior Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) ran a season-best 4:01.34. They finished fourth in their heat, but were still a full second faster than the winner of the second heat.
  • Bohbot-Dridi also contributed individual points to the Judges' cause for the first time in her career. She placed seventh in the 400-meter dash. After qualifying sixth with a p.r. time of 59.55 seconds in the prelims, she lowered her career-best by another 0.23 seconds to 59.32 seconds in the finals, taking seventh.
  • Campbell added an eighth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 11.29 seconds, recovering to cross the line after a fall.
  • The men had one additional scoring performance on Day 2 of the championships as the 4x400 team of Carleo, senior Samuel Kim (La Jolla, Calif./Phillips Exeter (N.H.) and first-years Deandrea Williams (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and Jonathan Wey (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) placed seventh with a time of 3:32.46.
  • The men finished with 12 points for seventh overall, while the women had 18 points.
