Walters Reached Semi at ITA Regionals

Box Score In Brunswick, ME, Brandeis men's tennis senior Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) reached the semifinals, and sophomore Alex Merson (Palisades Park, N.J./Tenafly) reached quarterfinals at the ITA Regional Championships in the singles at Bowdoin College. 

Walters was one of the tournament's (9-16) seeds. Walters opened the tournament with a three-set win over an Amherst opponent, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. He then had a straight-set win over a Tufts player, 7-5, 7-5. He then advanced to the round of 16 facing a player from Wesleyan. Walters had an easier time with another straight-set win 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. He advanced to the quarterfinals, where he faced the fourth seed from Babson, ultimately winning two of the three sets. In the first set, he won, 6-2. In the second set, he lost by the same score, but rallied in the third, to clinch the match with a score of 6-3, advancing him to the semifinals. On the third day, Walters played against the first seed from Williams, falling, 6-0, 7-5.

In other singles action, Merson started off strong with a two-set win against a player from Amherst College, with set scores of 7-5, 6-3, advancing him to the round of 32. Then he faced the US Coast Guards Academy's seventh seed. (They were only allowed to play two sets due to the opponent's injury that occurred in set two.) The scores of these sets were 3-6, 6-6. Merson then won a straight set against a player from Middlebury with a set score of 6-0, 6-1.  He advanced to the quarterfinals, where he was stopped the second seed from Colby College with a straight-set loss of 6-4, 6-1.

Brandeis sophomore Tommy Harrison (London, England/National Extension College) also had a good showing in the singles and doubles tournaments. He started off strong with his first-round win in the singles tournament playing an athlete from Springfield College, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. He then went on to play a (9-16) seed from Amherst College, where he lost 4-6, 3-6. 

Both Walters and Harrison played together in the doubles tournament, earning the seventh seed overall. They were given a bye into the second round but were upset by Middlebury players in a tiebreaker of 8-7, (7-4). The Panther pair went on to win the tournament.

Brandeis first-year Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Merson also played a doubles set. They won against Colby players 8-5, then advanced to the next round. They lost to the (9-16) seed players from Tufts University, with a score of 8-1. 

The Judges will return to action Oct 13 (Fri) Oct 15 (Sun) against Boston University and Merrimack College.
