Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Brandeis University men's tennis team saw two doubles teams reach the Round of 16 and a singles player in the 'B' draw quarterfinals at this weekend's ITA New England Regional tournament at Middlebury College. 

The Judges put two doubles squads into the Round of 16 on Day 1 of action. As a 9-16 seed, senior Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) and junior Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Bill Crothers Secondary School) earned a first-round bye, then dispatched the team of Gadhi and Batlanki from Babson in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4). The Judges also provided one of the biggest upsets of the second round. Junior Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel/Ironi Hey School Modiin) and sophomore Muaz Malik (Dubai, UAE/Laurel Springs School), who rolled past a pair from Bates, 8-2, in the opening round, took out the fourth seeds Wijemanne and Lewis from host Middlebury, 8-6, to reach the second day of action.

Both squads fell in close matches on Day 2 of action. Garbett and Wang-Fan went to a tiebreaker before dropping an 8-7 (7-4) decision to Yim and Kondamuri from the home team, while Shemesh and Malik went down to Yerger and Djokic of Tufts on late break, 8-6.

Two other Brandeis pairs also reached the second round, with junior Benjamin Kotzen (Austin, Texas / Austin Tennis Academy College Prep) and sophomore Oliver Lorenz (Albuquerque, N.M. / Rafa Nadal Academy) beating Spano and Lauw of Colby, 8-5. They extended the top seeds from Amherst, Sillaste and Frangenberg, to a tiebreaker before falling, 8-7 (7-1).  Junior David Wang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai United International School) and senior Huasen Dong (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Richmond Green Second School) bested Bonetto and Ford of Coast Guard, 8-3, but lost to another pair from the home team, Williams and Reiland, 8-5.

In singles play on Day 1, Shemesh, seeded third, was upset in his first match in a marathon, 1-6, 6-4, 10-8. Wang Fan also went to a third set, but could not overcome seventh-seeded Lucas Frangenberg of Amherst, 7-6 (7-1), 2-6, 10-8. Malik forced a tiebreaker in the second set before falling, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), to Max Golubenko from Trinity. Garbett, a 9-16 seed, dropped a 6-4, 6-4, decision to Anton Lim of Williams. 

In the 'B' draw, Huasen Dong made it to the quarterfinals. A 5-8 seed, Dong earned a first-round bye, then advanced when his opponent withdrew and the score in the pro-set with the match tied, 5-5. In the Round of 16, Dong survived a marathon with Christian Stubbeman from Bowdoin, winning 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. In the final eight, he dropped a 6-1, 6-3, match to Max Lidman of Babson. First-year Jonah Stolte (Overland Park, Kans./Blue Valley West) won a pair of matches to reach the Round of 16, knocking off Babson's Dylan O'Connell, 8-6, and Kristian Brodmo of Conn. College, 8-2, before extending top-seeded Jackson Rich of Tufts to a third set before falling, 5-7, 7-6, 10-3.
