Women fall to NYU, 3-2, on Senior Day

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker on Senior Day today, as NYU scored two goals in the second half after the Judges had taken the lead to earn a 3-2 University Athletic Association victory on Gordon Field.

  • Brandeis, 7-8-2, 0-6-1 UAA.
  • NYU, 9-3-5, 3-3-1 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • NYU opened the scoring in the 17th minute, with Kelli Keady scoring off an assist from Gabriella Funk.
  • Brandeis equalized in the 35th minute when senior Caroline Swan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) scored directly off a corner kick.
  • Brandeis went ahead in the 59th minute after NYU was called for a penalty in the 18-yard box. Swan took the ensuing PK, and though Violet goalkeeper Riley Felsher made the initial save, Brandeis senior Juliette Carreiro (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) was there for the rebound.
  • NYU evened things up again just about seven minutes later, when Funk picked up her second assist of the game on Hunter Hoelscher's goal in the 66th minute.
  • Eight minutes after that, NYU got a free kick near midfield. It was sent into the box, and Shannon Watridge was able to corral the ball and play it for Hoelscher, who buried it for the game-winning goal in the 74th minute.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • NYU held an 18-13 shooting advantage, including 12-6 in the second half.
  • Corner kicks favored Brandeis, 4-3, though all of the Judges' came in the first half, while NYU's all came in the second stanza.
  • Brandeis sophomore Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) had five saves, as did NYU's Felsher.
  • NYU was whistled for 13 fouls to 10 for Brandeis.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Carreiro's goal was her ninth of the season – a career-best – and the 25th of her career, making her just one of 14 players in school history to reach the milestone.
  • She also moved into ninth place on the career points with 71.
  • Swan's assist was the 17th of her career, tied with two others for sixth on Brandeis's career list.
  • The goal was her career-high third of the season and the sixth of her career.
  • NYU had not won in Waltham since 2011.
