Men's tennis earns 6-1 win over D1 Merrimack in first men's match at Cordish Tennis Center

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University tennis team jumped out to an early lead then hung on as the final four matches went the distance to pick up a 6-1 victory over visiting Merrimack College today. It was the Judges' first match in over a year and their first at the Cordish Tennis Center that was dedicated in the fall of 2019.

The Judges opened up with a pair of doubles wins to take the point, as the match was played under Division I rules. Senior Rajan Vohra (Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore) and sophomore Simon Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo. / Marquette) got on the board first with a 6-1 win at #3. Senior All-American Anupreeth Coramutla (Monroe Township, N.J. / Phillips Andover) and junior Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc. / James Madison Memorial) clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at #2. Merrimack prevent the sweep with a 6-4 win at #1.

In singles action, the bottom of the lineup got the next two points in straight sets. Rookie Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) picked up his first collegiate victory with a 6-0, 6-1, win at #6. Kauppila followed at #5 with a 6-3, 6-3, win. Coramutla had a chance to close things out at #1, winning the first set, 6-3, and getting to a tiebreaker in the second, but his Warrior opponent rallied for an 11-9 win to force a third set. Each of the top four matches went the distance, and it was junior Jeffrey Chen (Northfield, Ill. / New Trier) who clinched the victory with a quick final set, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. Coramutla rallied from his tiebreaker to win his third set, 6-3, while Tegtmeier won at #4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

The Judges return to action on April 15th with a match against cross-town rival Bentley University. These two teams are slated to meet again on April 18th
