Garbett a double-winner, but #20 men fall to #6 Case in UAA quarters

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team got a pair of wins from junior captain Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep), but the sixth-seeded and 20th-ranked Judges couldn't overcome third-seeded and sixth-ranked Case Western Reserve, falling 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the University Athletic Association tournament this morning.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 11-7, #6 seed, ranked #20 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
  • Case Western Reserve: 25-7, #3 seed, ranked #6 in DIII by the ITA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges had a chance to sneak out the doubles point against the higher-ranked Spartans.
  • Case won at #2, 6-1, but Garbett and partner David Wang (Shanghai, China/Shanghai United International School) took a 6-3 decision at #3.
  • At #1, the Brandeis team of first-year Oliver Lorenz (Albuquerque, N.M./Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy) and sophomore Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary School) met CWRU's Trey Lambright and Bryce Ware, the #4 team in the ITA National Division III doubles rankings. The teams were tied at 5-all before the Spartans got a late break of serve to give them a 7-5 win.
  • In singles action, the Spartans got a 6-4, 6-0 win at #3 and reversed the score, 6-0, 6-4, at #5, to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Garbett got Brandeis on the board with a convincing 6-2, 6-2, win over Matthew Plunkett, ranked #27 in Division III in the ITA singles rankings.
  • The Spartans clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #4.
  • At the time the match ended, Brandeis sophomore Danny Shemesh (Modiin, Israel/Ironi Hey School Modiin), who is ranked #23 in the ITA singles rankings, owned a 6-4, 4-3 lead on #22-ranked Santiago Salazar Garza of the Spartans.
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis will meet seventh-seeded and 25th-ranked NYU in the UAA tournament consolation semifinals tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. The Judges defeated the Violets, 4-3, last weekend.
