Judges fall to Bowdoin 5-2 in home opener

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass.- On Wednesday evening the Judges took on the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College on the season's warmest day thus far, in their home opener. Bowdoin is coached by Mike Connolly '94 who earned All-New England honors while playing at Brandeis. Brandeis fell to Bowdoin by a final score of 5-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bowdoin took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a leadoff walk, single, and sacrifice fly.
  • Freshman Albert Gutierrez (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) made his first collegiate appearance, starting the game for the Judges.
  • Gutierrez went 2.2 IP while allowing just one run.
  • Freshman Brandon Musto (Milton, Mass./Milton) relieved Gutierrez, going 1.1 IP while allowing three earned runs.
  • Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the fourth, when Bowdoin poured on four more runs to put them ahead 5-0.
  • Brandeis chipped away at the Polar Bear lead by putting up two runs on a Victor Oppenheimer (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade) single, two walks, and two hit by pitches.
  • The Bowdoin lead proved to be to much to overcome as they held Brandeis to a final 5-2 decision.
  • Brandeis' bullpen held the opposition scoreless from the fifth inning on, getting nice performances from Kyle Shedden (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty), Bradley Bousquet (Athol, Mass./Athol), Daniel Schupper (Villanova, Pa./Harriton), Mike Musto (Milton, Mass./Milton), and Anthony Nomakeo (Westfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon).
  • Bowdoin's Colby Lewis earned the win on the day, improving to 2-2 on the year while Gutierrez took the loss.
  • Bowdoin's Seamus Keenan also collected his first save of the year.
  • The Judges committed five errors on the day.
  • Victor Oppenheimer collected two hits in the contest and senior Ryan Tettemer (Westfield, Mass./Suffield Academy) reached base safely twice with a triple and a walk.
