#30 men's tennis opens season with 8-1 win at CalTech

PASADENA, California – The 30th-ranked Brandeis University men's tennis team opened their annual February break trip to California on Monday evening with an 8-1 victory over CalTech that was delayed because of rain. The match was also the Judges' first dual match of the campaign, as they improve to 1-0, while the Beavers fall to 1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED - DOUBLES

  • Brandeis opened the match with a doubles sweep.
  • Seniors Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) and Ryan Bunis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Groton-Dunstable, Mass.) took an 8-4 win at the top spot.
  • Rookie David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and sophomore Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) rolled at No. 2, 8-1.
  • Another set of seniors, Jeff Cherkin (Melville, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East) and Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) completed the sweep at No. 3.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SINGLES

  • Granoff got the Judges on the board quickly at No. 3 by winning 12-straight games, 6-0, 6-0.
  • Ng and Aizenberg won in rapid fashion at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively. Ng won 6-3, 6-3, while Aizenberg was a 6-2, 6-3 winner.
  • Local product Jackson Kogan (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Windward School) earned a straight-set win at No. 5, 7-5, 6-3.
  • The final two matches were decided in tiebreakers.
  • Bunis edged Derik Nguyen at No. 2, 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).
  • Caltech's lone point game in a marathon at No. 1, where Arguello was upset by Ruthwick Pathireddy, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 in the super tiebreaker.

  • The Judges continue their trip with a pair of matches on Wednesday, taking on Glendale CC and Whittier College.
