#15/18 BRANDEIS MEN CORNER THE MARKET IN 2-0 HOMECOMING WIN OVER #11/12 CARNEGIE MELLON

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team scored a pair of goals off corner kicks today as the Judges defeated Carnegie Mellon University, 2-0, in Brandeis's annual Homecoming game. In a battle of top-20 teams in Division III, Brandeis (#15 United Soccer Coaches/#18 D3soccer.com) improve to 9-2, 1-0 in the University Athletic Association, while CMU (#11 United Soccer Coaches/#12 D3soccer.com) fall to 8-2-1, 1-1 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges got all the scoring they would need in the 9th minute when sophomore back Alex Walter (Londonderry, N.H./Lawrence Academy) used his head to pound home classmate's Dylan Hennessy's (New York, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) corner. The goal was Walter's first of his career.
  • In the 32nd minute, the Judges added an insurance goal when senior Josh Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) curled his corner into the net from the left side. It was Ocel's third goal of the season and the 17th of his career.
  • With the goal, Ocel now has 74 career points, one behind his brother Sam '13 for 13th place on the Judges'  career list.
  • CMU owned the shooting advantage in the first half, 9-8, but pressed forward for a 13-2 edge in the second half.
  • Brandeis senior Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) made 10 of his career-high 11 saves after the break. He made a tremendous diving save in the 74th minute to stop Carnegie Mellon junior Zach Mascopinto (Solana Beach, Calif./Canyon Crest Acad).
  • In the 84th minute, Mascopinto had a ball cleared off the line by Brandeis senior Mike Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • CMU had the edge in shots (22-8) and corner kicks (11-5), but the Judges were able to make their efforts count.
  • Carnegie's Alex Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) made three saves in the losing effort.
  • The Tartans had not allowed two goals in a game since their season opener against Kenyon as they saw a nine-match unbeaten streak snapped.
  • Brandeis improved to 11-16-3 against CMU, including 3-0-1 in their last four meetings.

UP NEXT

  • The Judges travel to the University of Rochester for a UAA road game next Friday at 5 p.m.
