Men fall to #5 CWRU, 2-0, on the road

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The fifth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team scored twice in the first 23 minutes tonight and the Spartans hung on for the 2-0 University Athletic Association win over the visiting Brandeis University Judges.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 4-7-3, 1-3-0 UAA.
  • Case Western Reserve, 11-0-2, 3-0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spartans got the only goal they would need less than four minutes into the game. The Judges tried to clear a corner kick, but it landed right at the feet of CWRU's Ashton McNally 20 yards from net. McNally's volley inside the far left post gave the hosts the 1-0 lead.
  • Case doubled the lead in the 23rd minute when the Judges were called for a foul in the box, and the Spartans' Cormac Apostolides buried the ensuing penalty kick.
  • Brandeis was on the front foot for much of the final 66 minutes as they tried to get back in the game.
  • The Judges finished with a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks and 14-11 edge in shots, but the Spartan defense limited Brandeis to just one shot on goal in the 60th minute off the foot of junior Kaden Collins (Farmington, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School).
  • Senior Keller Chamovitz (Sewickley, Pa./Conestoga) was responsible for six of the team's 14 shots, while senior Maddox Yu (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) was excellent in his corner kick deliveries.
  • Sophomore Sotiri Tiglianidis (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) made four saves for the Judges in the losing effort, while Case's Carter Shedd had one stop for the shutout.
  • This marked just the third time this season that Brandeis has been shut out and first in just over a month.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will travel to Pittsburgh for an 11 a.m. kickoff on Sunday against Carnegie Mellon University in the back end of a UAA road trip.
