Men battle to 1-1 draw with Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team held the lead and advantage for much of the contest, but a late red card and a free kick helped the hosts Carnegie Mellon University Tartans battle for a 1-1 draw in University Athletic Association action today.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 4-7-4, 1-3-1 UAA.
  • Carnegie Mellon: 10-3-3-, 2-2-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a tightly-contested first half, Brandeis had a 7-6 edge in shots and 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Judges took the lead in the 34th minute on a goal by graduate student Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld (Santiago, Chile/Northwood School (N.Y.)). Senior Maddox Yu (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) had one of his patented long throw-ins from the right side. First-year Jack Rossiter (Watertown, Mass./BB&N) flicked the ball across the six-yard box, and Sanchez-Korenfield knocked it home.
  • The goal was Sanchez-Korenfeld's third of the season, tied for third on the team, while Yu's assist was his team-leading fourth of the campaign.
  • The Judges kept CMU at bay in the second half despite renewed pressure, but sophomore Sotiri Tiglianidis (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) made three saves to keep the visitors on top, and the Brandeis defense cleared a ball off the line.
  • A turning point in the game came in the 80th minute when a Brandeis player was assessed his second yellow card, putting the Judges a man down.
  • With CMU on the attack, the Judges committed a foul deep in their defensive zone, and the Tartans' Sandor Preta converted a free kick in the 85th minute to equalize the game.
  • Brandeis's Rossiter put a shot on goal late in the game, but CMU's Kai Yamamoto made the save to preserve the draw.
  • Tiglianidis finished with four saves, as CMU finished with a 19-10 shot advantage, 6-5 in shots on goal.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will take on the University of Chicago next Saturday at 11 a.m. They will honor the 50th anniversary of the 1976 national champions at halftime of that game.
