#28 men's tennis downs Coast Guard, 8-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The 28th-ranked Brandeis University men's tennis team rolled to its second-straight road win yesterday, as the Judges defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 8-1. The Judges improve to 4-3 with the win, while the Bears fall to 5-2.

Brandeis got off to a quick start by sweeping the doubles action. Sophomore Eric Goldberg (Solon, Ohio./Solon) and rookie Zach Cihlar (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) opened things with an 8-2 win at No. 3, while juniors Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) and Jeff Cherkin (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) were 8-3 winners at the top spot. Senior Danny Lubarsky (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) and junior Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./) closed things out with an 8-5 victory at No. 2.

Lubarsky opened things in singles action with a 6-0, 6-0, win at No. 5, while Arguello got the Judges within one point of victory at No. 3 nearly as quickly, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Ryan Bunis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Groton-Dunstable, Mass.) clinched the match with his first win of the season and of his career at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-2.

The Judges closed out their scoring with a pair of comeback three-set wins – Granoff won 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 and rookie Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) took a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, victory at No. 5.

Brandeis returns to action on Wednesday, March 30, at Babson College.
