Men's soccer picks up first UAA win, 2-1, at #10/23 WashU

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, MO. -- The Brandeis men's soccer team picked up a key University Athletic Association (UAA) victory on the road today as the Judges stunned #10/23 Washington University, 2-1, in St. Louis. Brandeis scored twice in a span of 2:08 to earn the win and improve to 6-4-3, 1-1-2 UAA. WashU falls to 8-2-1, 1-2-1 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

* Washington got on the board first in the 40th minute when rookie Jonathan Garske headed in a corner kick by classmate Makio Yamamoto.

* The Judges equalized following a corner of their own at exactly the 58:00 mark. Senior Zach Vieira (Andover, Mass./Brooks School) saw his initial shot cleared off the line, but the rebound fell to classmate Josh Ocel (No. Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy). Ocel punched it home for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

* Just 128 seconds later, Brandeis took advantage of a defensive lapse by the Bears to go ahead. Ocel turned a ball towards the WashU net in a crowded 18-yard box, and junior transfer Sam Vinson (Lauderhill, Fla. / American Heritage) was there to drive home his first goal in a Brandeis uniform.

* The Judges were able to hang on despite six Bear shots in the final 30 minutes, with junior Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) making one save in the 63rd minute to preserve the lead.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

* Washington held a 17-13 edge in shots, though the Judges were even in the second half at 8-all.

* Woodhouse earned the win with four saves, while the hosts' Nick Tannenbaum had two stops, with an additional defensive save.

* The win was Brandeis's third in a row against WashU in St. Louis, all by a 2-1 score.

* The goal gave Ocel points in three of Brandeis's four UAA contests this season.

* Ocel now has 49 career points in three seasons, moving him into Brandeis's career top 25 in scoring.

UP NEXT

* The Judges step out of conference on Wednesday evening to take on Clark University at 7 p.m. in Waltham. WashU meets Principia College Thursday at 7:30 (Central).
