Men's tennis finishes 6th at UAA Championships

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Brandeis men's tennis team finished to their seed at the 2015 University Athletic Association championships at Sanlando Park in Florida this weekend, as the 29th-ranked Judges defeated #40 Rochester, 6-3, in the tournament's consolation finals but fell to No. 12 Case Western Reserve, 7-2, in the fifth-place match.

Against Rochester, the Judges took a 2-1 lead after doubles. Sophomore Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and junior Danny Lubarsky (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School) led the way at No. 1 with an 8-4 win, while sophomores Jeff Cherkin (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) took an 8-2 decision at No. 2. The Yellowjackets picked up a point at No. 3 with an 8-3 win from Jonny Baker and Ben Shapiro.

In singles action, Granoff, Arguello and Cherkin proved to be double winners as the Judges clinched. Granoff posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1, while Arguello earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the second spot. Cherkin outlasted Sam Leeman of UR at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker, 8-6. The Judges also got a tiebreaker win at No. 4, where Ryan Bunis (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) was a 7-6, 6-1 victor, taking the tiebreaker, 7-5. 

Rochester's wins were three-set affairs. Baker earned a 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 win over Brandeis senior Alec Siegel (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) at No. 3, while Aaron Mevorach topped Judge junior Eric Miller (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker) at No. 5, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in the third-set super tiebreaker. 

The next day against No. 12 Case, the Judges were behind after doubles, with the No. 3 squad of seniors Siegel and Michael Secular (Bronx, N.Y./Plant, Fla.) earning one of the team's two points, 8-3, at No. 3. Arguello finished the tournament with a 4-2 overall record thanks to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Will Drougas. 

Brandeis closes its regular season with a 9-11 record.
