Men's basketball runs past Framingham St., 104-66

Box Score

The Brandeis University men's basketball team broke the century mark for the second time in three games this season, blowing past Framingham State for a 104-66 win. The Judges are now 3-0 on the season while the Rams suffered their first defeat, falling to 3-1.

Brandeis has now scored 111, 96, and 104 points in their first three games this season. It is the first time since 1994-95 that the team has had two 100-point games in a season. It is also the most points the Judges have scored in a three-game span since 1992-93, and a school record for points in the first three games of the season.

After sluggish starts to their first two games, Brandeis raced out of the blocks in this one, going on a 14-2 run in the first 4:19 of the game. All five starters had at least one basket during the run, finishing with an exclamation point dunk by senior guard Ben Bartoldus (Hillsborough, N.H./Proctor Acad.). The Judges continued to go on scoring spurts, reeling off 10-straight points to push ahead, 31-11, then 9-straight to stretch the lead to 52-27.

Brandeis finished the half up, 54-29.  Senior guard Gabriel Moton (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg) led all players with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while senior guard Derek Retos (No. Attleboro, Mass./Brimmer and May School) added 11 points off the bench.

The scoring slowed in the second half before Brandeis closed on a 30-18 run over the final 8:51 of the game.

All 15 players scored for the Judges, the second time the team has achieved that feat this season. Retos tied for game-high honors with 17, Moton chipped in with 14, and senior forward Alex Stoyle (Goffstown, N.H./Tilton School) added 11 on 4-for-5 shooting. Senior center Youri Dascy (Fall River, Mass./St. Andrew's School (R.I.)) had a game-high seven rebounds in just 10 minutes off the bench.

No Judge was on the floor for more than 22 minutes, as coach Brian Meehan was able to go to his reserves early and often to the tune of 60 bench points. Brandeis had 21 offensive rebounds, leading to 21 second-chance points.

Framingham State was led by rookie guard Charles Collins (Lynn, Mass./Boston College H.S.), who tied Retos with 17 points. Collins also tied Brandeis rookie Robinson Vilmont (Cambridge, Mass./Wilbraham and Monson Acad.) for game-high honors in steals with three. Senior forward Yemi Ajao (Randolph, Mass./Randolph) had seven points, four rebounds, and two blocks.

The Judges will play host to Rhode Island College at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Rams travel to Mount Ida on Saturday as well.
