CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Brandeis University senior midfielder
Corey Bradley (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) scored his
first goal of the season and junior netminder Matt
Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) made it hold up with six
saves as the Judges stunned Case Western Reserve University on the
road in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both
teams.
Brandeis (3-4-1, 1-0-0 UAA) was able to dominate the Spartans
(5-4-2, 0-1-0 UAA) in the first half, outshooting the hosts, 7-2.
The Judges were finally able to break through just before halftime.
With 72 seconds before the intermission, Bradley sent a blast from
35 yards out that beat Case netminder Ben Yabrow (Marietta, Ga.)
just under the cross bar. It was Bradley's first of goal since the
2007 season and the sixth of his career.
Case rallied in the second half, turning the tables with a 10-2
shot advantage, including 4-2 in shots on goal. Lynch was up to the
task, making four of his season-high-tying six saves to record the
squad's first shutout of the campaign and the fourth of his career.
Two of those stops came on the Spartan's leading scorer, sophomore
Vinny Bell (Parma Heights, Ohio).
With the win, the Judges earned their first conference win since
2006 against a team that had tied Ohio Wesleyan University, the No.
2 team in the nation, earlier in the week. Brandeis is next in
action on Thursday when they travel to New London, N.H., to face
Colby-Sawyer College before returning home for their UAA opener
against the University of Rochester next Saturday evening.
