WALTHAM, Mass. - The Brandeis University men's soccer team
battled visiting Case Western Reserve University to a 0-0 tie after
110 minutes in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on
Gordon Field today. Brandeis moves to 6-5-1 (0-1-1 UAA), while Case
is now 9-2-1 (1-0-1 UAA).
The Spartans, ranked No. 5 in the
Great Lakes region, owned a 16-10 edge in overall shots and 9-3 in
shots on goal. Brandeis sophomore goalie Matt
Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) was outstanding in his second
collegiate start, making eight saves. Case senior Konrad Karasek
(Prospect Heights, Ill.) had three stops for the visitors.
Lynch was tested early, making
two of his three first-half saves in the first five minutes of the
game off Spartan free kicks. Case senior midfielder Kevin Bigart
(Naperville, Ill.) hit the crossbar in the 16th minute,
but the Brandeis defense settled down for the rest of the half.
The Spartans got off to another
quick start in the second half, but they had an apparent
49th-minute goal called back for being offsides on a
rebound after Lynch stymied a blast from Bigart. Brandeis finally
got a shot on goal when rookie Evan Ersing
(Beverly, Mass.) got one off, but Karasek made the stop.
Early in the first overtime, Brandeis sophomore Matt
Hohmann (Weymouth, Mass.) cleared a shot by Case's Matt
Paglia (Pittsburgh, Pa.) off the line, while Karasek stopped
Brandeis sophomore Kyle Gross (Medway, Mass.) on
the Judges' counter attack. Lynch came up big again on a corner
kick as the first extra session expired.
Brandeis had the better chance in the second OT off a corner
kick. Rookie midfielder Luke Teece (Tuscon, Ariz.)
had one shot blocked by a Case defender, while Karasek gobbled up
his rebound attempt.
The Judges are next in action on Friday evening at the
University of Chicago in another UAA contest, while Case is in
Atlanta for a conference showdown with Emory.
