Kauffman strikes first, but women drop opener at Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team opened the 2026 season by taking an early lead, but Clark University scored four unanswered goals to rally for a 4-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when first-year Ella Kauffman (E. Greenwich, R.I./E. Greenwich) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season and her career.
  • The Judges carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime, despite Clark generating a couple chances in the opening 45 minutes as Brandeis junior goalkeeper Penny Alston (New York, N.Y./East Side Community) made two saves in the first half.
  • Clark quickly erased the deficit after halftime, scoring three times in the opening 12 minutes of the second period.
  • Clark's first goal came in the 48th minute when Kory Lloyd converted a pass from Lillie DeMetrick.
  • Just over two minutes later, Marcela Gonyea gave Clark the lead, with assists from Solimar Rivera and Selene Hammad.
  • Hammad added Clark's third goal in the 57th minute to make it a 3-1 game.
  • Brandeis continued to pressure late in the match, recording four shots and three corner kicks during the final 15 minutes, but Clark goalkeeper Gabrielle Huryn held off the Judges to preserve the victory.
  • Clark added an insurance goal in the 90th minute when Calabria Augustino scored, assisted by Rivera.

  • Brandeis outshot Clark, 16-15, and held a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Alston made four saves for the Judges, while Huryn and Ava Lepro stopped eight shots collectively for Clark.
  • Kauffman led the Judges with one goal, while senior Tanvi Raju (Hyderabad, India/Indus International School) recorded four shots and Kauffman, sophomore Moira Koleno (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet), and sophomore Sadie Williams (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) each had two.
