BRONX, N.Y. – The Brandeis University women's tennis team got a pair of wins from senior
Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China/Shanghai International Division), but host NYU took five of six singles matches to earn a 5-2 victory over the Judges in a key matchup for seeding in the upcoming University Athletic Association tournament.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 10-7, ranked #29 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
- NYU: 9-3, ranked #31 in Division III by the ITA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Judges started strong, winning the doubles point. Senior Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy) and junior Mandy Reyes (Manila, Philippines/Laurel Springs School) won 6-2 at #1, and Zhang and first-year Milana Sofizade (Sarasota, Fla./IMG Academy) won, 6-1, at #2. NYU took the #3 matchup, 6-3.
- The Violets won three straight-set matches in singles to take a 3-1 lead. They won 6-3, 6-0, at #3, 6-1, 6-4, at #5 and 6-4, 6-2, at #6.
- Zhang picked up her second win of the day at #4, 6-2, 6-4.
- NYU finalized the win with a pair of three-setters. At #1, Visinja Gusavac defeated Reyes, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, while Victoria Wang shook off a strong second set from Judge junior Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School), 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
UP NEXT
- The Judges and Violets will next play at the 2026 UAA Championships in Altamonte Springs, Florida from April 24 through 26. Seedings for the tournament will be decided early next week.
