WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's tennis team, ranked #28 in Division III, picked up a quick win in the first of two matches this weekend as the Judges defeated Skidmore College, 5-2, at the Cordish Tennis Center today.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 8-6, ranked #28 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
- Skidmore: 4-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Judges took advantage of a shorthanded Thoroughbred squad to earn a couple of wins at the bottom of the lineup.
- They clinched the doubles point at #2 with a 6-1 win by senior Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China/Shanghai International Division) and first-year Milana Sofizade (Sarasota, Fla./IMG Academy). Senior Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy) and junior Mandy Reyes (Manila, Philippines/Laurel Springs School) added a 6-3 win at #1.
- After Skidmore defaulted at #6 singles to give Brandeis a 2-0 lead, the visitors earned their first point when Suarez was unable to continue after dropping the first set at #1.
- A couple of quick wins at the bottom of the order completed the victory, as Zhang earned a double-bagel at #4 and Sofizade won 6-2, 6-0, at #5.
- Skidmore picked up another win at #2, while first-year Avani Chitale (Ahmedabad, India/Cosmos Castle International School) closed out the 5-2 win with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the longest match of the day.
