Judges three-hit Trinity in 6-2 win

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Brandeis University baseball held host Trinity College to three hits over nine innings as the Judges won their first game of the season in New England, 6-2, to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2020.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 5-0.
  • Trinity (Conn.), 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first, the Judges threatened but did not score in the top of the second, leaving the bases loaded.
  • That opened the door for the Bantams to strike first without benefit of a hit, as William Sawyer was hit by a pitch to open the frame, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a grounder to second.
  • Brandeis answered in a big way in the top of the third, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring five times. With one away, sophomore 1B Danny Tambascia (Newton, Mass./Newton North) walked and then scored all the way from first on a double by sophomore DH Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford) to tie the game.
  • Junior LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) followed with a two-bagger to center field that plated Lee.
  • Another hit batter chased Trinity starter Brendan Grady, and junior 2B Matt Chafin (Canton, Mass./Canton) tripled to right-center to drive in two more runs. Chafin scored on a sacrifice fly to center by first-year catcher Quinn Lanagan (Raynham, Mass./Xaverian) that gave the Judges a 5-1 lead.
  • An Aronwald infield single plated another run in the fourth, and that was all the Brandeis pitching staff needed.
  • Junior captain Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) threw the first 5.2 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. He struck out four and walked two to earn his first win of the season.
  • The bullpen did the rest, with sophomore Brady Lane (Hingham, Mass./BC High), sophomore Jack Sweeney (Waltham, Mass./Austin Prep) and senior Gavin Cooper (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) holding Trinity hitless for the final 4.1 innings. They combined for five strikeouts and two walks, each allowing one harmless baserunner.
  • Trinity's second run came in the sixth, when Aidan Stern singled, stole second and scored on Tyler Bernstein's bouncing ball up the middle. Tringe got a double-play to erase that threat, but after he hit two batters, Lane came on to get a strikeout to end the threat.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Judges were efficient, scoring six runs on just seven hits, four of which went for extra bases.
  • Chafin led the way, going 2-4 with two RBI, a double and a triple. Aronwald was 2-3 with two RBI and a double.
  • Tambascia reached base in four of his five plate appearances, drawing three walks.
  • Tringe earned his first win of the season and the second of his career.
  • The Judges' six-game winning streak dating back to last season is their longest since an eight-game streak in 2022
  • Their 5-0 start their best since the COVID-19 shortened start to the 2020 campaign. Their last 5-0 start to a full campaign game in 2002.
  • Brandeis and Trinity have alternated wins and losses each season dating back to 2016.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges' scheduled home game against Dean College for tomorrow has been postponed, with no makeup date announced. Brandeis is next slated to play Mass Maritime in Buzzard's Bay on Saturday at noon in a doubleheader.
